I just did a blog post about saving money at the grocery store. One of the tips is to really spend the time to look at what's on the shelf. Often the most expensive items are what is at eye level. If you look up or look down, you'll find a larger size, smaller size or off brand that is quite a bit less. I've been surprised to find great deals on the smaller sized items which the store has put on sale making them way less per use/ounce than the larger size.

Connie,
I've tried...boy have I tried...especially at Albertsons. I just don't remember the prices by the time I've gotten to the checkout.

keep in mind also that alternatives can "express" similar flavors for a similar dish...personally, i dont cook with meat, i use soy stuff, and it tastes just as good

I have never learned how to make soy stuff express similar flavors. I know tofu is supposed to do that but havent' figured out how to make it happen. Hopefully you can offer me some education in this area

well it depends on what soy stuff you are using;TVP flakes or regular Tofu. Tofu really has no flavor and there are plenty of cookbooks to tell you. But the first thing you need to decide is texture. If you want your tofu to be "chewy" resembling meat that means you need to freeze it before you use it or fry it. If you like the texture and dont care if you see the tofu - then fresh tofu can just be crumbled into a receipe. personally with small kids and finger foods fry it and cooling and then using sauces they like even Ketchup is a great protein snack. Sorry about this being so long. There used to be a coobook which was from The Farm which was a commune you know from the 60's that survived, anyway I used theirs alot and liked them. if people have more to questions be happy answer I will say you ahave to be willing to like tofu otherwise if you have someone that is dead set against it no luck I have converted a couple by making chococlate pudding (read tof;)u) pie but most wont unless they started with an open mind Hope this helps!
