Anyone else watch the series finale tonight? Wow! I think it was one of the best finales of all time. I still rank MASH's final episode and my #1 but LOST comes in a very close 2nd.
And the ending...I didn't see that coming. Pure genius!
I didn't actually start watching Lost until the beginning of the 4th or 5th season, but once I watched one, I was hooked. Then I went back and caught up on the first few seasons.
I loved it because there was always 2 or 3 stories going at once, which always kept me interested the whole way through. And you just never knew what was going to happen next. Just when you thought you had it figured out, they through a curve ball that catches you off guard.

Yes I really liked the ending and as you said didn't see it coming. I was shocked at the ending. Those writer that created that show are really genius. They know how to keep you interested and have several things going at once. You never knew what to expect to happen next. You could really get hooked on all the characters. much like a soap opera which I don't watch.

Nothing beats the *M*A*S*H* finale, where 60.2% of US households watched it, as compared to #2 Cheers with 45.5% of US households watching it. I remember *M*A*S*H* parties scheduled for the finale, and I was at one! When it ended, most people were teary-eyed and sad. I was surprised to find out that Friends was #4 on the list with 29.8%. But the good news for OC is that Seinfeld was number #3 with 41.3% of the US market. I used percentages instead of millions of viewers, as population changes over the years. I don't know what percentage of US households watched the LOST series finale, but I do know it had 45 minutes of commercials; which ticked off the Spousal Unit quite a bit. I can't think of a single thing on LOST that surprised me, but then again - I never watched a single episode.

Well it was 2 1/2 hours long, so that sort of explains the commercials. It's the longest series finale that I know of. MASH was 2 hours if I'm not mistaken (I have it on DVD, I'll have to look).
It's hard to come across a great finale. Some of the best shows of the 90's had the worst endings. Roseanne: everything we knew was all just a part of her writings and in her "real life" it was all switched around (Dan was dead, kids were married to different people).
Home Improvement: the Taylor's moved out of Detroit to follow Jill's career and they moved the whole house with them. Although it was in true Tim Taylor fashion, I didn't care for the end.
Seinfeld: they all end up in jail for not helping someone being mugged and go on trial. All the people whose lives they sort of messed up over the years end up testifying against them.
Friends: they all move out & go their separate ways. At least Ross & Rachel got back together, that was always meant to be.
One thing's for sure, MASH finale was the best. I still get choked up as BJ heads up in the chopper & looks down to see the "GOODBYE" written with rocks by Hawkeye.
But I'll stand by my word that LOST comes in a very close 2nd.
