For a first time blog, I suggest trying blogspot.com. If you look in my signature, my link is in there, so you can get an idea of what it looks like. It's a very simple website, and walks you though setting it up and all. Good luck!

Blogspot is easy and fun. Plus they let you use your own google adsense on it so you can make money once you get traffic.
Wordpress is nice because you can have catagories but you have to get your own hosting in order to put any advertising on it..
I would start with blogger.

Even though I don't blog, I know a little about hosting! First - always be courteous to your guests - wait - wrong hosting - switch tracks - better now: See the following link for good unbiased ratings of web hosting sites: Click me. I think a Diet Site on Fat Cow would be hilarious! I have friends who swear by 1&1 hosting, but it didn't even make the list.

Are you SURE it's all unbiased? Do you ask that because they list costs of only the premium plans for the sites (they do that for equal comparison), or are some sites omitted that should be? I suppose that there is some bias, but overall I believe it is a good listing of hosting sites. With the advent of high availability solutions and redundant network configurations, the reliability of many hosting sites has become close to 100%. But, poor testing is still a problem, as Google can attest with their latest fiasco marking all websites as adult content and preventing access for over two hours.

I only ask because most of the links are his affiliate links.... reminds me of the "these are the top work at home sites" type of websites. However, I don't personally know the author so?? Oh, I never said you had to join using his links - I don't know the author either. However, I don't find joining a site under someone's affiliate link a problem, if they have saved me time and effort. I feel that it is the least I can do (and also the cheapest!). As a result of this post, I went and reviewed 1&1 to see why it did not make the list, and found a mixed bag of reviews. The negative ones were mainly people who had to deal with their Customer Support (languages issues mainly, I really hate outsourcing), and the positive ones were affiliate/referral links. So 1&1 not being included on the list is justified in my eyes. Out of the three people I know who were using 1&1, 2 switched last year, and the last one says he is just too lazy to switch (LOL, he is busy). None of them have encountered problems, where they needed to contact customer service. But we are IT folks, and we just ask each other - mainly because we have more training than the customer support desk personnel - not trying to brag, just fact.
The top 10 web hosting sites listed are legitimate sites, and you can look at each review to find the best one to meet your needs. Big word of warning - Web hosting is just that - you are responsible for the HTML/DHTML/XHTML, CSS, XML and/or Databases and SQL to interface with them. So if you have no experience with web sites, then you need to find someone who does, so they can guide you in the right direction. There are many companies and people out there who do this, and their fees range from justifiable to astronomical/unbelievable. Then again, some are just plain bad, so get references and check on them; which entails calling their reference and also looking at examples of their work on the Internet - If you don't like it, don't buy it!
