Six states have new laws requiring drivers, convicted of DWI/DUI, to have an interlock device that must be blown into before the vehicle can start. To read the article, click Here. So I was reading it , and got to the section about: Although this is portrayed as saving lives, I think the additional 4.5 to 9.9 million dollars the state would receive in fees might have something to do with it. The argument, that if they have someone else blow into the device then they would be facing jail time, is really weak - they will be facing jail time anyways. If they are drunk, then they are impaired; and any successful lawyer will present that as a mitigating, not aggravating, factor. Then the part about the devices getting more sophisticated and being able to sniff the cars' interior is kinda scary. Where is it going to stop Soon we will have factory installed interlocks in all our new foreign cars, and the car will shut off or not start if anyone enters the car that has imbibed alcoholic beverages. This would have far reaching consequences: i.e. Golf courses would no longer need bartenders at the 19th hole, etc...
