It is difficult to make an assessment of President Bush's administration right now. His approval rating is very low, but how is this different than the low ratings that Presidents Carter and Clinton had at the end of their terms? I, for one, am glad that we had a President who was willing to respond to the Sept 11 attacks. I admit I had tears in my eyes during a Tody Keith concert, while he was singing Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue. The line "We'll put a boot in your *ss, it's the American way" bespoke of the feelings of an outraged Nation. I think a major reason GWB made it into office the first time, was that America was tired of the philandering ways of President Clinton, and the shady financial dealings (Whitewater) that both he and his wife were involved in (ever notice how well that was covered up? ).

Me personally.. I think he is just one more member of the Bush Crime Family... I think he has bailed out certain banks because he and his family and friends have major stakes in them.. I think he has bailed out the automakers because he holds big stakes in Chrysller, I think he was "elected" because his brother is the Governor of Florida and convienently made sure the voting system got screwed up. I don't believe anything happens by coincidence when a member of the Bush family is involved. As for the Clintons...they weren't any better and they are also very involved in many of the bailed out banks... I do LOVE the Toby Keith song though..

I think the biggest problem is that people let their party affiliation dictate who they trash and who they don't, when in the end all politicians are as crooked as a car salesman and you can't trust a single one of them.
I am an Independent, but by reading what I have to say (and I admit it) I tend to lean right, or at least appear to. Probably mainly because of conservative values. But I do have many Liberal views & values as well.
I just don't like how Democrats & Liberals today act & speak. Their party has changed. Very hypocritical...they'll trash Bush for saying something today that they said yesterday. They've had a very heavy hand in publicly dividing this country and our enemies see that. It's not a good thing.
I agree with Louis and I also said it in another thread, I'm glad to have had a President who wasn't afraid to do what had to be done no matter what the approval rating showed. My only wish is that the stinkin politicians here in the U.S. would have let the war in Iraq be fought how it was supposed to be. Fought by the military and not by politicians. It's a war, people will die and people must die...on both sides. Don't give me this crap about the U.S. military death count because we lost more of our military men & women in single battles in WWII than we have in the whole Iraq war. But back then the country didn't belly-ache about it and demand impeachment. They knew the cost and supported the war effort. Maybe they really were the greatest generation.
Sure Pres. Bush comes off as an idiot. For me, it makes him more personable. Just another guy like you or me. I'm honestly not saying this about anyone here, but I understand it comes off harsh. I think many people who hate Bush do it because they just don't know. They watch CNN & MSNBC and regurgitate the same useless rhetoric they hear on TV and pretend to know what they're talking about. A very good friend of mine is the perfect example of this. He doesn't do any research or take the time to learn about it....he just repeats what he hears from a Liberally biased media. If I come back with factual rebuttals, he has nothing to say. I think a lot of people are like that. They hate Bush because everyone else does too.
Am I saying Bush hasn't done anything wrong? No, not at all because he has. There's plenty foul ups under his watch. But I also believe that the Pres. (no matter who he is or what party he belongs to) is just one person out of many idiots screwing up our country.

This is an area that is pretty near and dear to my heart.. and I will be the first to admit these are just my own personal observations and thoughts.. no research involved.
Like you OC, except different.. my leanings have always been more Liberal. However this year.. I went Independent. Im sick of both parties and their crap.
As far as my feelings on Bush... I was a military wife during his daddies reign.. I fully supported our troops (my friends)... they also all told me how at many times Saddam was within a mile and they knew it but weren't allowed to act. When we pulled out without finishing the job, many Americans were very upset, especially those of us in the Military.
When Bush number two took over.. I stated many times that we would be back at war before he was done.. On 9-11.. I said it again.. and within days we were there.. In my opinion, as any kid would do.. he wanted to prove something to his dad.. it has nothing to do with Saddam himself... just Bush wanting to prove himself..
During this entire war.. especially after Saddam was captured I have asked others repeatedly.. "if it's about 9/11 why are we not putting up a bigger fight in Afghanistan and going after OBL?
I for one can say that was the tipping point for me with Obama as president.. he asked the same question...
There are MANY things about Obama I don't like.. but this was one area I felt he got right... if we are really after the terrorists who brought about 9/11 we should be in Afghanistan and not be so concerned about finishing what "Daddy" started.

I feel differently about Gulf War I. Our mission was to liberate Kuwait and we accomplished that mission. It was not to remove Saddam. So I don't look down on Bush Sr. for not taking him out.
As far as Afghanistan, it "fell" fairly easy. I'm not saying there's peace on Earth there now, but we did put up a fight and took the capital as you do with any strategic war. But just like Al Qaeda in Iraq, the Taliban are like roaches. And I do not say that in a racist sense. You squash one and the rest run & hide in their holes. Next thing you know they're coming out of the wood work. After killing some, there's hundred/thousands more to take their place. Even if we put up a "bigger fight" the results still the same....they regroup in their hiding places and just pick at us.
That's why I said I wish these wars were allowed to be fought by the military & not by politicians back home. You have to kill, and unfortunately innocent people will die too. But to defeat the enemy, you have to kill. It's not necessarily nice so the politicians need to stop trying to do it in a nice way and let the military do its job.
I feel that Democrats during Bush's 2 terms would say anything as long as it were the opposite of him & the Repubs. It amazes me, on both sides, that barely a single person was willing to break party lines to have their own opinion & voice.

The "War on Terror" was coming long before President Bush entered into office, nor is it the domain of the United States. We are actually late comers to the party, although when invited, we tend to be hard partiers. On September 11, 2001, we were spectacularly invited (It must be remembered that there were two previous WTC bombings). I remember the massacre of Israeli athletes during the Munich Olympics in 1972. The Israeli response was to hunt down and kill those responsible, wherever in the world they tried to hide, and other civilized countries said shame, shame, shame... So terrorism kept growing basically unabated. This was not unnoticed by the Intelligence communities, but nothing could be done when your hands are tied by liberal concerns espousing rights and privacy, both at home and abroad. Nothing could be done until they actually commited a crime - it took 9/11 to have the fetters somewhat unchained - but now the liberals are trying to put them back on. This scares me
