Just tried it yesterday. I used 1 cup grated fels naptha soap, 1/2 cup washing soda and 1/2 cup of borax. I added a few drops of citrus oil for scent and so far it's working great! You only use two tablespoons per load so it lasts a long time and is super cheap!

I think I am going to go with powdered next time. I did Ivory soap, bakin soda and borax with water. I get a gel like 'top' on it that has to be broken back up all the time. but I do like it. and its SOOO cheap.
I am DEFINALTLY not buying soap ever again!!

Me either. Im really loving this stuff and I think it cleans so much better. Plus I had someone tell me that the musty smell washers sometimes get, comes from the liquid soaps and the animal fat in them.
My washer had that awful smell and I never could get rid of it even after I switched to powders. With this concoction.. the smell was gone after two loads and I haven't had a problem since!
The only odd thing with this powder: The first time I made it the Fels grated perfectly into a really fine powder. With the second bath the bar grated more like cheese with the little curls. I think the second bar must have been fresher or something? I liked the fine powder much better.

washing soda is basically a crystalline mineral that is used to make washing powder and other things, it dissolves rather easy and its also good as a stain remover . you can buy it at www.soapgoods.com
