It's funny. Gym people have said the elliptical is more difficult than walking because it's not a natural motion but I find the elliptical to be way easier!

I went for a walk yesterday with a friend. We were gone an hour. My shins hurt today.

So proud of you, Connie for sticking with it!! I'd come walk with you if I was there. I have found that it really does help to have a partner. I couldn't keep going like that if I didn't. Again, I'm so proud of you! You will hurt until your body gets used to it, then it will feel so good. Just knowing that I am out there and doing it instead of sitting around makes me feel good. YAH!!!!!

We started a new gym yesterday. The new equipment works other muscles. Some of those muscles are now sore. Here we go again LOL.

So...I rode the bike at the new gym. It's going to take some getting used to. I knew just the right settings at the old gym. We didn't go till 5ish and boy was it crowded.

Audrey, I've thought about joining a gym, but I wonder if the benefits I get from walking would be the same or better there?
I don't blame you, connie. I hate walking in the cold. There is an old factory building here that the city bought a few years ago. They decided to open it up to the public last winter for those of us that walk and exercise. They even taped it out to tell us how far a mile is....5 rounds. LOL It's open from 6am - 9pm every day and it's free. They have it open all year round, but it is mostly utilized during the winter. Until they did that, we didn't walk that much when it was cold. It was too much trouble. But now we go every day.
I must brag a little too. We realized tonight that we have picked up our pace enough that we are walking a 15 min mile, but we are still only doing 2 miles a day. Our goal is to get up to 5 miles in an hour by the end of summer. It still seems slow to us though by watching all the other people walking at the park. They fly past us and we are lapped repeatedly. lol At least we are out there moving.

Fergui,
I was walking. I wasn't seeing results and I was not good at follow through. I'd say "oh it's too hot" or "oh it's too cold". When I joined the gym, I began going every day. I've just made it a part of my day, a part of my life.
There are tons of exercise DVD's out there, tons of websites with floor exercises. City colleges offer really inexpensive classes. There are just lots of choices for exercise. For me, for right now, the gym is what I'm doing. I've been going since about October. My goal is 7 days a week. I almost always hit 5 or 6 days per week.
Since October I've now lost 28 pounds. I'm going to be so happy if I lose 2 more. Then I'll work on maintaining it.
I made two changes in my life to lose that weight. I changed my eating habits and I began the daily exercise. The combination of those two things led me to lose the weight.
I think it's really awesome that your city made available this public walking place. What a great gift to the residents.

That walking area does sound really awesome! Audrey it sounds like you have done REALLY well with your plan! I really think that is the key. It's finding what works for you and what you can stick with.
For me... I needed a guideline and the weight watcher points does that for me. I don't think I could follow the whole weight watcher program and do well with it though. I like the flexibility and the not having to really give up anything but having to make choices instead. (does that make sense?)
Today I had every intention of walking 45 mins to make up for yesterday. However.. we ended up walking twice the normal distance in about 30 mins. It was more of a trot than a stroll for sure! From what Fergui says on her walks it seems like we were walking about the same pace.. I can't imagine being passed up at that pace! I will be happy when I am where you are right now and can walk like that without being out of breath!

Just like surveys, some things work for one, but don't work for another. My big thing was finding something that I would stick with. Just like you, Audrey, I made it a part of my day and everything works around it instead of the other way around. It's a priority now. I'll probably keep walking, but I am looking for something that will work my upper body as well. We've talked about taking weights with us when we walk, but it just has never gotten done. Probably procrastination or laziness. LOL It sounds like you have found what works for you and you are doing very good.
