Why should we keep trying?
It took over 100 years to outlaw slavery and even longer to give the vote to women. Good causes sometimes take quite awhile in our system. Civil liberities took close to that much time after slavery was outlawed and we just got the equal pay law.
President Truman tried for health care, even President Nixon in a twisted way and then President Clinton. We missed a big chance with President Nixon, as too many liberal wanted all or nothing and they got nothing. Clinton came closer than many think till Republicans figured they could be against it and not get hurt as much as they feared.
I don't quite know why President Obama has tried to deal with the majority of Senate Republicans when anyone could see they are not interested. He needs to step up and explain the need and truth of the matter.
THis is still a good cause. Health care should be a group good. Like Defense, Highways, and all the big issues that when the 'government' does not step up everyone yells.
Insurance companies already choose who lives and dies. They decide who even can get medical insurance. Women are dispaportionaty lacking health care because the majority have partime, low paying, or are stay at homes. When women don't get care often thier children both in and out of the womb get no care.
You pay premiums, then you have deductables and then the insurance will pay about 80 /75 of the costs (though they are getting traction with Republican on 75/65 % of the bill. All the while the insurance industry has seen profits in the billions.
Universal health care should be the goal. We need to take the profit motive out of health decisions. Doctors are coming around to this as they had not yet done during the Clinton fight.
I hope we at least get the public option and I think folks will flock to it.
This fight is taking time, but it should not be given up on.
That's my opinion anyways.
