When my daughter was a young child, I always told myself that I couldn't wait until she was 18...then my parenting job would be over and she would be in charge of her own life.
As I have learnt over the years...parenting does not end when our children turn 18. As mother's, we still dish out the advice on what type of jobs they should have, what type of men they should be dating and about the clothing they wear.
As they continue through young adulthood, we still continue to parent them by advising them on marriage, pregnancy, children and further career choices. As I have now learnt, its a never ending process of parenting.
I think it's important to not lecture them at this age about the choices that they make. As parents, our job at this age is to educate and inform them in a non-bossy non-threatening type of way. I like to look at it as 'guiding' them down the path of young adulthood.
My daughter is now 25 years old and to this day, I still find myself parenting her...although its in a different manner than when she was 12, 16 and 21 years of age.
So as a mother of an adult child and a grandmother of a 1 year old...I can personally tell you that your job as a parent does not end when your children turn 18. The only thing that changes is how you parent your adult children and what topics you parent them on.
