During the Bush Administration the news camera were barred from showing flag drapped caskets of our returning military members. I never agreed with that, it isolated the costs of war. Now the AP decides to show the pictures of the death of a young Marine. When the White House asked them to change their minds but after debate they went for it anyways. www.politico.com/news/stories/0909/26759.htmlDuring Vietnam the pictures became relentless of the suffering and it turned the tide of support. President Reagan would not let Granda be covered by the press(how he could be afraid we might lose that one is a joke) The first President Bush barred the press as much as he could without shooting them. What is the right balance of realism and voyerism? Do you think these heart wrenching pictures are good or should the rose colored glasses stay in place? Should we see what we send our military to do. Most American's have no idea what it means to be military and what they can be asked to do. I am wondering if the family was consulted on this. What do you think?

The family was consulted. They asked for the photo not to be published. Out of everything, that's what upsets me the most. If the family asked not to run it, common decency would be not to run it.
On the better side, I suppose, I can't find the picture online. I didn't look very hard, though.

I have to agree, if the family doesn't want the photos released, respect their wishes. However if the family wants coverage, then let them deal with the media. The White House shouldn't have a say in it.

I'm not sure how I feel about this one. The family should have their wishes respected but showing caskets is an anonymous thing. During WW II the media did not show pictures or film of dead Americans-bad for moral. I think that Americans need to be reminded of the cost of War-but in a way that respects the dead. We need to be reminded of exactly who and what we are fighting. IMHO pure evil-scum of the earth. I haven't seen too many images of people jumpng from the Towers on 9/11. Why is that? Too disturbing or they don't want us to get totally pissed off by the garbage that wants to destroy us Americans do not have long memories about these things. I believe we that the men and women that are taking the fight to the savages overseas are the main reason we have not had another big incident here in America. If we take the boot off of their neck, watch out! If you want to check out terror, study up on what happened in Beslin, Russia 4 years ago and imagined that happening in America times 3.
