It has been 50 freaking years of trying to get a regime change in Cuba and it hasn't really worked. I'm no fan of Commie governements but the world has certainly changed in 5 decades. Maybe it is time to use the carrot and not the stick with the Cubans. Open things up and let the people see what they are missing. Maybe once they see what the free world has to offer they will be willing to change. If not, screw 'em! BTW all these lefties and Hollowood types are complete morons when they go to that 3rd world hell hole, meet Castro and claim he is the greatest guy in the world. That POS is responsible for thousands of murders and has imprisoned countless others who speak out against the government. He will be smoking turds with Satan in hell in the near future! JMHO Oh, and I won't have to smuggle cigars in from Canada anymore.

i think you are pretty much right on, jow32.
one of the new policies is to allow our TV broadcasts to reach the socialist 'paradise' of Cuba. they should have been doing that a LONG time ago. when those poor bastards see how rich everyone else in the developed world is they're going to be justifiably P.O.'d
most likely this will hasten a positive regime change. it's one of the reasons the eastern bloc failed in the cold war. eastern europeans knew that life was WAY better in the west and the west's higher standard of living undermined the government's authority.
to be sure, castro is a dictator and a thug. there were a LOT of improvements to Cuba under his leadership but it doesn't change the fact that the people are living in a dictatorship without what we consider basic, inalienable rights.
it will be very, very interesting to see how he is memorialized when he dies. who will be singing his praises, who will be honest about his record?

Still a lot of restrictions as I understand it. The travel and money can be sent by close family not just any American. But 50 years of a policy not working does kind of call for "lets try another tacted"
I hope one day relations can be normalized, I think it would work out for everyone concerned.
But come on JOW32, lefties and Hollowood types, name names, don't lump together, it weakens the point. Which lefties, which Holloywood type. I know there are some, which ones are you refering to? I agree with you on much of what you say though.

Oh, Steven Spielberg thinks Castro is a great guy for one. I think Sean Penn was down recently and fell in love with Castro, or was it Hugo Chavez? Those are two off the top of my head, I would have to look around for more but it shouldn't be to hard to find them. 6 members of the Congressional Black Caucus just went to Cuba a few weeks ago to meet with the Castros. Apparently they were very impressed with the two.

Who knows, maybe something good will come of it. There are many families torn apart by the situation. I hope the younger Castro might not be so driven by the idea of Communism as his brother was and still is by most accounts. There are some Hollywood types like Chuck Norris that are totally against Cuba, it just depends on what part of Hollywood you are watching. I hadn't read about the Congressmen, thanks, I will look it up when I get a chance.
