Most online poker sites use freeroll tournaments to attract players to their site.
Typically these tournaments are Texas Hold Em, and you play against 2,400 or more opponents. First place pays $15, then $12 for second, and 9, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 for the remaining places at the final table. 10th through 27th place pays $2.
So, if you are good enough, or lucky enough to finish in the top 10% of the field, you get at least $2.
Usually it takes 4 or 5 hours to get to the paid money positions, and if you go on and make the final table you will have at least six hours invested.
Most of the big online poker sites have these freerolls running 24/7, starting every hour or every few hours.
In addtion to the freerolls, the online sites have play money games where they start you off with 1,000 chips. If you lose the chips you can reload for free. Some of the sites allow you to use these fake chips to buy your way into other tournaments with cash prizes. Believe it or not, there is a market for fake poker chips. People buy and sell them for cash.
The main reason why I wrote this post was to mention a type of freeroll I neglected to mention in my original thread. There are a number of online poker forums that sponsor their own freerolls. Because they are limited to forum members, they are much smaller and offer much better cash prizes.
In these tournaments you usually play against 1500 players instead of 2400 and finishing first earns you $32 instead of $15. Essentially they pay way more and the games are faster because the fields are so much smaller.
In addition to the freerolls, poker forums also hold private tournaments for cash players. These are great because you are playing with friends instead of the anonymous masses you typically encounter in online tournaments.
In summary, online poker freeroll tournaments are fun and you can actually make a little cash without ever having to deposit a cent. In addition to the freerolls offered by the big poker sites, you can also join online poker communities and play in private freerolls that pay even bigger prizes. Also, it takes a lot of time to make it to the money...usually hours. But it can be done, even by those with modest poker skills, like me.
If anyone is interested in more information about the online poker community and the private freerolls, let me know.
