WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. consumers should brace for the biggest increase in food prices in nearly 20 years in 2008 and even more pain next year due to surging meat and produce prices, the Agriculture Department said on Wednesday. Food prices are forecast to rise by 5 percent to 6 percent this year, making it the largest annual increase since 1990. Just last month, USDA forecast food prices would climb between 4.5 and 5.5 percent in 2008. news.yahoo.com/s/nm/food_prices_usda_dc

This get me mad because there is no real reason for it. I realize fuel prizes are killing the truckers thus raising shipping costs, but the subsidize paid not to grow things. All the corn wasted on fuel projects that cost more to make than save. I wish just once Washington would say OK, no more tax on FOOD, this would include milk and like products, the government could also pressure states not to tax these things either. Sales taxes on food are the most regressive of tax. They hurt the poor and middle class and short of giving up eating, your just screwed. They don't mind bailing out Wall Street, but won't give us any relief at the check out line. I know; I'm ranting again.

Anyone else notice that the cost of so many food items went up because of rising fuel costs, but now that gas it down, food prices didn't fall with it? At least around here they haven't.

Might as well throw airlines in with that. I saw a news bit that the airlines now say they 'have' to keep the extra charges they instituted to offset the high gas prices. When they started charging for an extra 'bag', I started telling the spousal unit that if I had to travel anywhere she would have to stay home. It just slipped out...I didn't mean it...
