Hi all,
I can see I am not the only one fighting the fight.
Well I am going to try to get my weight under control again. As I am older I know it will be harder. I also have the extra problem of having hurt my back (I had run my own construction company). It hurts almost constantly mostly when sitting or bending over.
For the month of July I will cut calories quite a bit, about 1000 a day. When ever I want to cheat I say to myself 'Independence Day" 4th of July motif, and you can work out the rest of the Freudian stuff. (Marriage a bit shaky after 26 years)
When August comes around I will see how to stabilize and maintain. At least I hope that is how it goes.
Either way I sure would like to check in about once a week and If any of you have any advice or are going through the same please chime in.
Wish me luck, Eileen

I right there with you! I started out strong and keep SAYING Im getting back to it and while I AM still maintaining the 15 lbs I lost in the beginning, I am SO not getting back to it...
Everyday I think it's a new day and today I didn't do bad at all... In all reality, right now the hardest thing for me is to make sure I eat breakfast. I can keep the calories down easily enough because I got into the habit of eating better those first 6 weeks so it's no longer a real biggie.. but breakfast is a MUST (in my opinion) AND for me alcohol is the killer.. it's so full of calories and with summer... well... margaritas are a really nice summer drink I have decided... sigh...

Sometimes accountability can be huge. Make it a goal to check in here daily/weekly, whatever works for you.
Connie...congrats on the weight loss.

Accountability, thats the hard one.
My first week could have gone better. What started as having no plans for the July 4th weekend turned into party central and food everywhere (my son has too many friends that like to visit Las Vegas)
Well the hot dogs, ribs and so many other things that go straight to my all over abound. Did I resist, You can sure bet I did not. I failed. But today is another day and I try again. One thing I think I have done right is the breakfast thing. I start the day with a bowl of ceral Mon-Fri and eggs on the weekends. I need to add more stable lunches this week.
I will check in next week, Thanks for just being out there, it helps.
Eileen.

Planning is huge too. If you know holiday weekends present lots of food options, plan ahead. I eat hot dogs, but they're usually planned. So I'll make a salad, or other lower calorie side dishes. Also, I buy wheat buns, not white buns. With planning you can really reduce calories on what could be a disasterous meal.

Hi Audrey and Connie,
I took your advise. I tried to plan my meals more this week with a bit of success. I think in my case I will have to train myself not to do all the easy things I have always done.
I have stuck with eating a cereal breakfast Mon-Fri. I have started taking 35min walks to begin with. I think I need to work on something new this week, but I have a lot of bad eating behavior to unlearn. You think 50 is to old to start over with new habits? Me neither. Talk to you next week, and good luck to you both on your journey.
Eileen

Hi I am keeping up with the walks and having breakfast everyday. The eating habits from lunch to bedtime are still catchers catch can. (what does that saying mean) The battery on my scale died, I think I am the type that needs to look at my actual weight once a week to keep focused. Of course it is one of those batteries you have to go to radio shack or Batteries Plus for. It is on my list of things to do. Hope all is going well with you two. Eileen

Eileen, I'm still working out daily and trying to eat right. I stay very accountable with my scale. I'm thrilled to hear you're forming some new habits such as breakfast and walking

Audrey, Got the new batteries for my scale. To say it was a wake up call, OMG :o12 pounds creped in while my scale was in limbo. Between moving to a new state, 4th of July, my son in law back from Iraq for leave, and then my own birthday party; quite a few pounds snook back on me. Why is it so easy gaining, not so much the other way. Oh well, I am not giving up. here we go again. At least I know where I'm at with this challenge. Eileen

Eileen,
I work every day at this. Some folks never think about it, I work daily at it. This isn't a bad thing, it just means that every day I'm knowingly making choices.
Here's an example. I attended a luncheon on Tuesday. One woman brought brownies. I did eat one. It was yummy. It was a choice. I made a choice to have no other desserts that day and I stuck to it.
She then asked me to bring the brownies to work. On Wednesday I made a choice. I did not want the brownie to be my dessert of the day and I knew this, so I didn't eat one yesterday.
Like I said I make choices every day and work on this every day.

Sometimes it is like beating your head against a hard place. After all this time, I have lost 3 whole pounds, I guess it is better than gaining. I just can't seem to make myself want to do this. I like food. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Eileen,
You are so right. You really really have to want to do this. At work, people can't believe I pass up all the homemade baked goods. But I do. They are there all of the time and if I don't pass them us, I won't maintain this weight.
Do you exercise? I know that helped me tremendously.

Eileen, I think you are being too hard on yourself. If you look back at your posts... almost exactly a month to the day you said you had gained 12 lbs you have now lost 3! That is great!
It is a healthy weight loss and you will find it easier to maintain a steady weight loss. Your body is learning to adapt to a new lifestyle and find a new metabolism. You are doing great!

Thanks for the encouragement. I mentioned in another post I have what I think may be a pinched nerve. Shooting pain down the butt and through one leg. almost like the worst cramp imaginable. Between this and the fact I am having teeth pulled and this weight is losing importance. I am just trying to keep sane.
I did however lose another two pounds but that was most likely because I had to live on Jello for two days.
