I don't know if this works but I am going to give it a try:
Vinegar. A ratio of 1 teaspoon vinegar to 1 quart water (per 40 pounds of pet weight) in their drinking water helps to keep your pets free of fleas and ticks.

Did you try it yet? I guess the worst that could happen is that the dog would smell like an Easter egg.

Not yet. I will start doing it this spring when it gets warmer. I don't even know... can fleas be a problem in the winter when it is so cold? I just assumed they were like the rest of the insects and went away in the cold weather.

The fleas go into a dormant state through winter. A better alternative to vinegar in the water is a small amount of garlic powder. NOT garlic SALT, the powder. Some pets will not drink the vinegar or garlic water , but I bet when it's hot enough in the summer , they will!! Fleas do not like the taste of garlic/vinegar so if your pooch will work with ya , it is a great alternative to flea medications (which fleas are becoming more and more immune to).
There are also some great homemade dog shampoos you can make yourself which save money, make the dog smell better, and keep flea populations down. ;D
